OB/Midwife/Doula Recommendations

Postby obfclare » Wed Feb 11, 2009 12:11 pm

I apologize for taking so long in sending out a compilation of recommendations. My husband and I have transitioned from "being ready to begin trying" to actually expecting :) So things have been a whirlwind lately!

Here are all the recs I received. Thank you so much for all your help!

I might be biased, but I love our practice. I'm a nurse practitioner at Roswell OB/GYN. We have an office at Northside Hospital with an excellent group of midwives. They delivered our little guy this past January.

I don't know of one close by unfortunately but you could call Dr. Alise Jones-Bailey's office for a recommendation. (She is a holistic OB practicing in the Roswell area.)

Also, check out Labour of Love Doula Services http://www.labourwithlove.com/doula_services

and see if they can recommend someone in your area.

I love my OBGYN - Dr. Deborah Lee of Atlanta OBGYN. The practice is mostly made up of physicians, but they have two midwives, who are both great. I was unable to appreciate the midwives with my delivery since my son was breach and I had a c-section. Also, I've heard the doulas at www.alaboroflove.org are great. Good Luck!

I can recommend a doula service. I used Honeysuckle

doulas (honeysuckledoulas.com). Holly, who runs the

service is fabulous. At first it was hard to open my

house to strangers, but I have come to trust her and

the women who work for her completely. They are

lovely!

Renee Bishop (Certified Nurse Mid-wife) at Georgia OB/GYN is wonderful. She delivered my son - very attentive, never left the bedside, spent hours with us, and was an overall wonderful person.

Hi Elle. I'm 26 weeks pregnant and going to Margaret Strickhauser at North Pointe OB/Gyn in Roswell- she was referred to me by two different people (who don't know each other). Its a haul all the way up to Roswell for the appointments and I'll be delivering at North Fulton Regional Hospital, however Margaret is fabulous and generally regarded as "the mother of midwifery in Atlanta" and North Fulton is the only hospital in the metro area that still allows water birthing (i.e. they are more open-minded about the birth process and don't have mandatory-IV policies or anything like that). I also hear that Judith Cox at Piedmont is a great midwife, but a little more "medical" (i.e. way more inductions and cesareans). I have also heard that DeKalb Medical Center has a great midwifery practice but a was not given a specific name.

For my doula, I'm looking into the Labor of Love Doula & Childbirth Services, Inc. They also come highly recommended.

Another doula who was recommended to me is Ella Johannaber. She is also a yoga instructor and I believe teaches hypnobirthing.

Finally, I highly recommend the Pierce Yoga Program in the Highlands for Prenatal Yoga classes and prenatal massage. They have a very holistic approach and also teach labor/delivery/postpartum classes. My favorite instructor is Margaret Pierce.

If you're looking for a doula (excellent idea, by the way), you can find a referral list at

You're going to be hard pressed to find holistic and natural in Atlanta. Northside has one of the highest c-section rates in the city; most moms are encouraged to stay in bed so that they can be monitored and most moms are medicated. The OB/GYN's around here are far too worried about litigation. Even though Emory's nursing school has a midwifery program, they closed down their midwife practice at Crawford Long Hospital! The midwives at North Fulton hospital (Margaret Strickhouser, CNM) are well loved among the doulas in the city. Dr. Joseph Tate (delivers at Crawford Long Hospital) has a super low c-section rate because he has a lot of patience. He's got great reviews on Kudzu.com and delivered my second child via VBAC when most practices said that they were VBAC-friendly but weren't. He's not afraid to deliver breech babies either and can turn a breech baby (external version) prior to labor.

I used our labor of love doulas, Pam Roe. She was great. I had a birth at Emory Crawford Long, wanted to have a good experience but

still have an epidural/medica care. She was very supportive/accepting of my choice of approaches. There are other great doulas in that group too that you can meet at their monthly (or every other month) teas.

Hi. I am not sure if anyone recommended Dr. Joseph Tate to you. He is as close to a Mid-wife OB as you can get. He stays with you during your entire birth. He is not the kind of Dr who just comes in for the birth. When we did our hospital tour the nurse said he is one of the favorite Doctors that they work with. He also practices at Crawford Long.

I can recommend my ObGYN: Dr. Janice Johnston at Piedmont hospital. She has been delivering babies for almost 30 years. She is very nice and calm and has a great bedside manner. I delivered my first baby at Piedmont hospital with Dr. Johnston. I had a natural delivery, no epidural, and everything happend the way I wanted it (including no episiotomy). I had told Dr. Johnston about my wishes during the pregnancy and she completely supported me. Also, the Piedmont nurses worked with my wishes - I did not even have to formally hand them my birth plan. There were no midwifes in Dr. Johnston's practice though so this might not work for you if you're looking for a midwife. I found that the nurses at Piedmont were very nice and willing to breath with me through the entire labor and delivery. I am now 36 weeks pregnant and am planning on the same type of delivery.

Best of luck!

Other recs I received from personal friends:

-Pam Brown (near DeKalb Medical)

-Dr. Arluck- she is laid back, funny, and ready to accept alternative points of view

-Dr. Jose Garcia with Peachtree Women's Center (404) 225-8022. They have an office near Northside Hospital and another one in Cumming.

-ObGyn of Atlanta (Dr. Wootten). Dixie, my midwife was awesome.

-Dr. Michele Houston (office at Northside)
